What does the Assistant Instructor course entail?
The PADI Assistant Instructor course is designed to bridge the gap between being a Divemaster and becoming a full-fledged Open Water Scuba Instructor. It focuses on refining your instructional skills and knowledge while allowing you to assist instructors with teaching various PADI courses. During this course, you'll deepen your understanding of dive theory, enhance your teaching techniques, and learn to deliver effective presentations.
You'll also gain hands-on experience by participating in confined water training sessions, open water teaching scenarios, and classroom presentations. This course not only prepares you for the Instructor Development Course (IDC) but also hones your leadership abilities and elevates your dive education journey. When can I start the Assistant Instructor course?
To start the course, you need to make sure you have met all prerequisites:
Certified PADI Divemaster
Or: if you have a leadership-level certification with another recognized recreational diver training organization, we will check the eligibility with the PADI Regional Headquarters. Documentation of any non-PADI qualifying entry level, advanced, rescue and leadership level certifications is required.
18 years old
Medically evaluated and cleared for diving by a physician within 12 months. Download the Dive Medical Form here.
Completed Emergency First Responder (EFR) Primary and Secondary Care training within 24 months, or hand over a certificate of completion from an equivalent training organization which we can verify with PADI.
Assistant Instructor Course Schedule.
The course flow is flexible, however you need to finish all items of your course within one year.
1. Knowledge development:
Start with completing your IDC eLearning at your own pace. This eLearning code is only available through our dive shop and comes with several aquatic cue cards for Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Divemaster and Discover Scuba Diving. We recommend finishing your eLearning, before starting the practical part of your training.
2. IDC Curriculum Components
Participation in a range of IDC curriculum components is essential to complete your AI training. This includes engaging in workshops that delve into crucial areas such as the PADI System, Risk Management, Knowledge Development presentations, honing your skill set, and gaining hands-on experience in conducting both open and confined water teaching presentations.
3. Practical skills and exams:
To attain certification as an Assistant Instructor, you'll be required to showcase proficiency in the diver rescue techniques and mastery of the 24 skills. Besides that, you will need to deliver two Knowledge Development presentations, two Confined Water teaching presentations, conduct one successful Open Water teaching presentation, and pass the PADI theory exam encompassing systems, standards, and procedures.

Price includes only in-water training, excludes PADI IDC eLearning + crew pack
The price excludes rental of dive equipment, and tanks. Price also excludes the Assistant Instructor Application fee (125 usd in 2023). Please know that after certification you are required to renew your In-Teaching Status yearly. This costs you about 153 usd (in 2023) if you choose the option for automatic renewal.
AI’s also need to have their own additional dive equipment materials, such as a compass, dive knife and surface signaling devices. We recommend a pocket mask, slates and a pencil too. All these items are not included in the price but for sale at our dive shop.
